Galaxy and Central Black Hole Coevolution: Gravitational Wave and Multi-messenger Astronomy

Event Details:

To: 05 June 2011
Address: Aspen Center for Physics

The first week will begin with a series of discussions that focus on models of the origin of seed black holes, the distribution of dark matter halos, and the growth history of both black holes and their host galaxies. This will be followed by discussions on the mechanisms by which different stages in the evolution of massive black holes produce observable signatures.

The second week will start with discussions on the capabilities of modern gravitational and electromagnetic observatories and surveys to detect the signatures of these populations of black holes and to characterize their stages of evolution. The workshop will conclude with an exploration of the ways that observations across a wide frequency range of both electromagnetic and gravitational radiation can be used synergistically to constrain models for the growth and evolution of galaxies and massive black holes.
