Coronal Mass Ejections on 28/29 October 2003
Date: 31 Oct 2003 In the morning on Tuesday, 28 October 2003, active region 10486, already under close scrutiny by several instruments on SOHO and other satellites, produced an X 17.2 flare. This is the second largest flare observed by SOHO and it set off a strong high energy proton event and a fast-moving Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), hitting the Earth early on Wednesday 29 October. This was followed by an X 10.0 flare on Wednesday afternoon setting off another round of particles and another fast-moving CME. This movie covers the two events on 28 October and 29 October and is made from observations by the C3 camera of the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) on board SOHO.
