Herschel Status Report - January 2010

Report for period 7 December 2009 to 22 January 2010

Mission operations of the Herschel space observatory continued nominally during the reporting period, with the spacecraft and subsystems all performing as expected. The critical parts of the HIFI recovery have now been completed with the back-up electronics successfully switched on.

No. 127 - Preparations for the Deep Space Hibernation Mode test

Report for Period 26 December 2009 to 15 January 2010

The reporting period covers three weeks of operations for the Rosetta spacecraft. Early in the reporting period on DoY 001 the spacecraft experienced a safe mode. This was triggered by a problem on one of the subsystems' Remote Terminal Units (RTUs). The spacecraft was fully recovered and the cause proved to be not permanent.
During the last week of the reporting period final preparations for the forthcoming test of the deep space hibernation mode (DSHM) were conducted. This test will validate the operating mode that the spacecraft will use for a period of about 2.5 years, from June 2011 till January 2014, during its passive cruise to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

No. 216 - Start of Solar Conjunction Operations

Report for Period 27 December 2009 to 2 January 2010

The Venus Express spacecraft and instruments performed nominally during this week. On 29 December (DOY 363) the Venus Express operations entered the solar conjunction phase. During this phase, which will last until 22 January 2010, no science activities are planned and there are fewer, plus shorter, communication passes. All science operations were stopped on DOY362. All on-board science data was transmitted to ground and the solid state mass memory (SSMM) was emptied in preparation of the solar conjunction operations.
